CHAPTER 15

Legs didn’t yell at Audrey though the fear he’d felt mixed with the anger at her creating an account that could be traced to her left him feeling agitated. She’d messed up. But everyone messed up at some point, and there was no need to be a jerk. She felt terrible, and she’d learned a lesson.

Audrey sniffed as she stepped away from him. She picked up his dishes and loaded the dishwasher before setting it to run. She turned to stare at him. He stopped and glanced up to meet her gaze. Her forehead had deep wrinkles, and her eyes were sad. He didn’t want her to be so upset. Her mistake was fixable.

“I’m really sorry.”

The anguish in her voice made his stomach clench. He wanted to go to her and pull her into a hug, but they weren’t a couple. He couldn’t force her to break a vow, even if that vow was with a piece of shit guy who didn’t deserve her. “It’s okay. You learned never to use that old email address.”

She nodded, looking a little distant. “I’ll pick up a new phone when I get to work. I’ll text you the phone number.”

He smiled, hoping she could pull herself out of the emotional hole she’d dug. “We’ll work on getting you a new email address and accounts with fresh passwords he won’t be able to guess.”

Her breath hitched, and he couldn’t stop himself. He moved to her, holding her close. She had made a critical error that reminded her how cruel Eddy was. He hadn’t read all the texts, but he’d read enough to piss him off. The man was an asshole. He didn’t respect Audrey at all, and there was no way he loved his daughter based on what he said he would do to her. They weren’t safe with Eddy out in the world, and no matter how much Audrey wanted to protect Meredith, the girl was at risk. Eddy couldn’t be trusted, but taking him out without provocation would be just as bad as what Eddy had done. They needed a way to get the cops to arrest him.

Legs needed to think on the matter. Maybe with Rawlins, Tex, and the rest of the guys helping, he could somehow keep Audrey and Meredith safe.

The next few days were busy with his work, and then Meredith came down with something that shot her fever up over one hundred. They ended up taking her to a clinic on Saturday and getting a prescription for an ear infection.

Finally, about a week after the initial scare from Eddy, he and Audrey sat down and created a new email address they confirmed through Legs’ account. Audrey knew she had to be extra careful now.

“The phone Eddy texted, should I keep it off or turn it on every few days?” Audrey asked.

“Why don’t you let me have that. Then you don’t have to listen to or read the crap he sends.”

Pain flashed across Audrey’s face. The more pain she suffered, the harder Legs found it to ignore his desire.
